A Mighty Work of God

A Mighty Work of God

Throughout the Bible God had recorded many miracles through the lives of godly men and women. In the United States in the 19th century, revival came to our country. God had raised special men to bring his message and many came to Christ. One of these men was Charles Finney. I wanted to share this special story with you, demonstrating the power of God, in one area in New York state. This is in Finney’s own words so the language may be a bit of a challenge.

On the third Sunday that I preached there an aged man came to me as I was entering the Continue reading A Mighty Work of God

It Takes a Giant Killer To Make Giant Killers!

David Kills Goliath

I made this fast drawing for my grandson some time back. It is supposed to represent David going out to do battle with Goliath. King Saul is standing in the foreground watching David.

Five Stones

David, the shepherd boy, took his sling and went out to face the mighty Goliath. David bent down and picked up five smooth stones from the brook. He put four of the stones in his pouch and one in his sling. Why? Did he think he was going to miss? Maybe, or maybe it was because he knew Goliath had four brothers and David was ready to take them on as well – what faith!

Who’s Battle Is This Anyway?

David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will  deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give all of you into our hands.”  I Samuel 17: 45-47

Leading From Behind

So Where is King Saul? He is standing safely on the hillside. If they lose this battle it will be David’s fault, but if they win this battle, Saul will be there to accept all the honors. Yes, King Saul is dressed like a warrior. He has sword, spear, armor and shield, but under it all he is a coward. He stands tall on the outside but on the inside he is a small man (not by stature standards). All the men behind King Saul are cowards as well, including David’s brothers that were soldiers in Saul’s army.

The Rest Of The Story

So we all know the rest of the story. David kills Goliath and there was a great victory for which Saul took credit. However, did you know that because of Saul’s jealousy for David he tried to kill him and for ten years he had to run for his life from Saul? Later, David became King. During the life of Saul only David was a giant killer, but when David became king several of his men went out and killed giants and some killed more than one giant!

Wrap Up

Moral of the story: It takes a giant killer to make giant killers. What great faith David had, but in reality it was his faith in the LORD Almighty. That day God came through for David. God came through for Israel. He comes though for everyone who has taken courage from this story, because “it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’S”

This is a needed lesson for America today. I’m for a strong military, but first we desperately need to fall down before the LORD and seek His help and call upon the LORD Almighty.
